The awards are for currently enrolled
students and are to be used “exclusively for educational expenses.”
The Gilbert O. Maienknecht Scholarship for Merit
Who can qualify:
Scholarships will be awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students for use in the academic year. The scholarship is awarded to a student on the basis of merit, with a priority to students in (1) journalism, (2) student media, and (3) broadcasting.
The Department of Journalism will select its winners upon the recommendation of the department's Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism and/or broadcasting fields.
- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- Applicant’s essay of merit.
- Full-time student status.
The Robert E. McCabe Scholarship
Who can qualify:
Scholarships will be awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students for use in the academic year. The scholarship is awarded to a student on the basis of financial need.
The Department of Journalism will select its winner upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation that the applicant intends to pursue a career in the journalism and/or
broadcasting fields.

- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- Applicant’s essay of merit.
- Full-time student status.
- G.P.A. of at least 3.20
- Financial need; FASSA form must be on file with Financial Aid Office
The Friends of Journalism Scholarships
Who can qualify:
Scholarships will be awarded to currently enrolled undergraduate students for use in the academic year. The scholarship is awarded to a student on the basis of merit and financial need.
The Department of Journalism will select its winner upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation that the applicant intends to pursue a career in the journalism and/or
broadcasting fields.

- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- Applicant’s essay of merit.
- Full-time student status.
- G.P.A. of at least 3.20
Leadership Award
Who can qualify:
A scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled undergraduate student. The scholarship is awarded to a student on the basis of leadership. Priority is given to students majoring in Journalism.
The Department of Journalism will select its winner upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee.
Criteria considered:
- The pursuit of an academic curriculum that qualifies applicant for careers in journalism.
- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- An explanation of leadership activities.
- Applicant must meet committee selection guidelines that include the following:
- Leadership in department groups, events, and associations;
- Leadership in activities outside the department (examples include organized groups, clubs,
community volunteer programs and events);
- Experience in field of study (examples include working for the yearbook, newspaper, television station, etc.);
- Full-time student status
The Outstanding Senior Award
Who can qualify:
A scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled undergraduate student for use in the academic year.
The Department of Journalism will select its winner upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism.
- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- An explanation of merit.
- Full-time student status
The Journalism Scholar of the Year Award for Merit
Who can qualify:
A scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled undergraduate student for use in the academic year.
The Department of Journalism will select its winner upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism.
- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- An explanation of merit.
- Full-time student status.
The Pam Klein Memorial Endowed Journalism Scholarship
Who can qualify:
A scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled journalism major entering his/her junior or senior year. The student must have a minimum 3.0 GPA overall and a 3.3 GPA in journalism.
- Have at least two semesters of significant contribution as a writer and/or editor for CM Life
(qualitatively decided by the CM Life adviser).
- Intend to pursue a career focusing on writing or editing only (not design, photography or broadcast technology)
- Are avid readers of the news media
- Have demonstrated curiosity about how things work; demonstrated tough fairness and fair toughness; demonstrated the tenacity to do what’s right, not what’s easy; demonstrated clear writing that cuts through the clutter and gets to the meat of an issue; demonstrated not only high journalistic standards but also serve as role models and/or mentors for other journalism students
- Do not smoke or otherwise use tobacco products
The Jim Wojcik Scholarship for Merit
Who can qualify:
A scholarship will be awarded to a currently enrolled undergraduate student for use in the academic year.
The Department of Journalism will select its winners upon the recommendation of the department’s Scholarship Committee based on the following:
- Confirmation the applicant intends to pursue a career in journalism and/or broadcasting fields.
A signed major/minor form must be on file.
- Recommendation forms from two Central Michigan University journalism faculty members
who are not on the Scholarship Committee.
- Applicant’s essay of merit.
- Full-time student status.
- Experience on "Central Michigan Life".
