Employers expect online journalism, news editorial, photojournalism,
converged media, advertising and public relations students to have had
at least one internship by graduation. Internships offer students
opportunities to use their skills in a real-world context, gain
experience and build their portfolio. A successful internship
indicates the applicant has the knowledge, skills and experiences
necessary to be successful in the workplace.
The journalism department helps arrange internships to match students’
career interests and goals. Students have completed internships in
the media and related industries locally, nationally and internationally.
Online Journalism
Program started Fall 2009.
News Editorial
Internships include The Associated Press, Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, The Washington Post, St. Petersburg Times, BlackBook, and the exchange program between the journalism program and the China Daily, in which the intern lives and works in Beijing, China.
Advertising
Internships completed by students include The George Moses Company, CMU Athletics and Parsons & Maxon, Inc.
Public Relations
Student have completed internships with the Detroit Pistons, the Michigan Humane Society, Detroit Zoo, Michigan House of Representatives, American Red Cross, Link Community Development in London, England and numerous other PR agencies.
Photojournalism
Student have interned at Pear Creative, the Midland Daily News, Traverse Magazine, Saginaw News, Grand Rapids Press, Muskegon Chronicle, Detroit Lions and the Sydney Daily News in Sydney, Australia.
